  1. Setting Your Preferences

  3. You can modify America Online in a number of ways to suit your needs.  To change your "Preferences," choose the "Customize" option on the "Go To" menu; then pick "Set Preferences."   The preferences are divided into three groups:

  5. CHAT PREFERENCES

  7. -Double space lines in chat: When you select this item, it tells America Online that you want a blank line between each Chat message in People Connection, auditorium, and conference rooms. (The default setting is for single lines in Chat.)

  9. -Use chat room sounds: When this item is selected, chat room sounds are enabled.  This means that any sounds you send or receive will be played on your computer's speaker if you have them available on your disk (see also: Help for Using Chat Room Sounds).  (The default setting is for the sounds to be enabled.)

  11. MAIL PREFERENCES:

  13. -Use flashing mail notice: When checked, this item asks America Online to flash a mailbox symbol in the upper left of your computer's screen when you have mail waiting online. (Note: this feature requires System version 6.0 or later.) (The default setting is to use the flashing mail notice.)

  15. -Use mail sound:  This option asks America Online to play a mail notification sound when incoming mail has arrived or is waiting.  (The default setting is to use the mail sounds.)

  18. OTHER PREFERENCES:

  20. -Auto-scroll incoming items: When checked, this tells America Online to keep scrolling new information as it comes in.  Note that you can use the scroll bar to move backwards within your text even while the information is still arriving.  Also note that People Connection, auditorium, and conference rooms always use auto-scrolling. (The default setting is not to utilize auto scrolling.

  22. -Use other sounds:  This item controls the use of sounds other than the mail, chat, and Instant Message sounds, like the Welcome and Goodbye greetings.  (The default is to utilize these sounds.)

  24. -Use flashing Instant Message notice:  When checked, this item asks America Online to flash a notification symbol over the Apple in the upper left of your computer's screen when you receive Instant Messages.  See the "About Electronic Mail" help item for more information about Instant Messages.  Note that this feature requires System version 6.0 or later.  (The default setting is to utilize the Instant Message notification symbol).
